SAN JOSE, CA—A major software company rolled out a 4.2-gigabyte update Monday. Its only new feature is an improved reminder to install the update later.
"Our research showed that 97 percent of users press 'Remind Me Tomorrow,'" said product lead Derek Tolland. "We wanted to make that experience faster, smoother, and impossible to dismiss."
Under the new version, the reminder appears every 40 minutes. It is redesigned in a calming shade of blue and now has a third button, "Remind Me In An Hour," which the company calls a breakthrough in user choice.
To get the improved reminder, users have to install the update. Engineers admitted that was "a tension we are still exploring."
"Essentially, you have to update to get better at not updating," said engineer Priya Nandakumar. "Some people on the team found that confusing. They have been reminded to discuss it later."
The company says another update is coming next quarter. It will let users schedule the reminder for times when they are already asleep.
At press time, about 300 million devices had chosen to install the update tonight.
