PHOENIX—A national gym chain announced Tuesday that members can now cancel their memberships at any time. All they have to do is appear in person at its new Member Exit Center, which is open from 6 to 6:15 a.m. on every other February 29.
"We heard our members loud and clear," said vice president of retention Kyle Dorsey. "They wanted a way to leave. Now there is one, and it is in Duluth."
Members who go will need to bring a photo ID, a notarized letter of intent, and the original keychain fob they were issued at signup. Members who lost the fob may apply for a replacement, which requires an active membership.
The company says the new option shows its commitment to transparency. It also notes that the Exit Center has a full set of free weights, should members change their minds while they wait.
"We've had three successful cancellations since 2016," said branch manager Lisa Ferro. "One of them later rejoined."
At press time, the chain had announced a premium tier that lets members cancel online for an additional $14.99 a month.
