SCOTTSDALE, AZ—A wellness clinic announced Thursday it would relabel every vial in its refrigerator "for research use only," after its attorney explained that the phrase is the only thing standing between the business and several federal agencies.
"We thought it was a suggestion," said clinic director Dana Pell, gesturing at a shelf of identical amber vials. "It turns out it's the whole business model."
Under the new labeling, customers will no longer be told what a vial does, how much of it to use, or whether it does anything at all. Staff have been instructed to describe the contents as "a compound" and to answer follow-up questions by repeating the phrase slowly.
The clinic's website now lists each vial under "Laboratory Supplies," alongside a note that any resemblance to a treatment is coincidental and should be reported to the front desk. Prices are unchanged.
"The research community has been very supportive," said Pell, referring to a group of regulars who come in twice a month, pay in cash, and have never published a finding. "One of them has been researching the same vial since March."
Regulators have not commented, which the clinic's attorney described as "the best possible outcome" and "also how this usually goes." The attorney added that the clinic should avoid making claims on its Instagram, then declined to define "claims," then billed for the hour.
At press time, the clinic had ordered a second refrigerator, citing a backlog of research.
